Take any prejudices you may be harbouring against pleasure cruises and cast them overboard. My family and I have just returned from a P&O voyage to the Norwegian fjords, and let me say this: it was one of the best holidays we’ve ever had.

In fact, the secret is already getting out. A record 1.7million Britons took to the waves on cruise ships last year. I’m a little disappointed that I can’t keep it to myself, of course, but I’m not in the least surprised.

Here are some of the highlights: sipping a cocktail on the balcony of our cabin, watching the sun fall silently into the glassy ocean. Sitting with the kids in a jacuzzi on deck as we glided in to the stunning Norwegian port of Olden, snow-capped mountains soaring on either side.
