Calorie counts on restaurant menus do not inspire people to live a healthier lifestyle, scientists claim.

New York City is currently marred in a court fight to require all restaurant menus to include calorie counts.

However, the jury is still out on whether giving people the numbers encourages them to eat healthier – and now, a group of scientists have published a damning verdict on the popular health measure.

The city says that by requiring eateries to tell people that their $4 cheeseburger will also cost them about 540 calories, it is helping diners make informed choices in an era of rising obesity.

But scientists are saying there is no conclusive evidence that people will make healthier choices when they see the calorie amounts for the different menu items.
