Peter Kyle said Labour could have done even better at the election

At an animated rally this evening held by the centrist Labour group Progress, MPs said that the party shouldn't "kid ourselves" that their work was over.

Peter Kyle, the Brighton and Hove MP, told delegates at the party's conference: "The manifesto was a solid Labour manifesto.

"But let's not kid ourselves that it can't be improved.

"The Labour party can do better for young people."

And Mr Kyle, who has been a fierce critic of the Labour leader in the past, said that he could have done even better in June's election.

Had the number of Tories swapping to Labour that he saw in Brighton been replicated across the country, "we would have had a landslide to eclipse the 1997 landslide," he said.

He said now Jeremy's position in the party was secure, the party "should be more confident and allow more robust policy debate going forward."

And Shadow City Minister Jonathan Reynolds said that despite Jeremy's solid position in the party following the snap vote, "Progress is going to go from strength to strength".
