PA:Press Association There is speculation the Chancellor will raise fuel tax in next month's budget

The warning from the Centre for Economics and Business Research follows fresh speculation the Chancellor will increase the hated tax for the first time in seven years in next month’s Budget.

It came as Theresa May’s DUP allies became the latest to urge the Chancellor to freeze or even CUT duty.

Howard Cox – co-founder of motoring lobby group FairFuel UK – said the CEBR’s report was clear evidence a duty hike would hit motorists hard and fuel fears of an economic slowdown.

He told the Sun: “It would be political and economic suicide to increase fuel duty. Any hike will increase inflation, cost jobs and slow fiscal growth.”
