A hairdresser left bed-bound by Lyme disease claims she was dismissed and insulted by a GP who told her that ‘if Stephen Hawking can work, why can’t you?’.

Recalling the horrifying moment, Sarah Jackson, 29, said she felt insulted by the crude comment, which compared her to the world-renowned physicist who is wheelchair-bound and can only communicate using his eyes.

Professor Hawking, who suffers from motor neurone disease, is only able to speak through a speech-generating device that he controls using a muscle in his cheek.

Sarah, from Colchester, said: ‘I just feel very let down by them.

‘One of the GP’s actually compared me to Stephen Hawking and said: “If he can work why can’t you?” I just walked out at that point.

‘I gave up on the NHS after seeing around nine to ten different GPs over a year. When I first got sick, I had to use Google to look at what could be wrong with me.’

Sarah has criticised the NHS after doctors allegedly laughed at her and said her illness was ‘all in her mind’.

She now has to wear sunglasses inside because she had increased sensitivity to light
