LABOUR’S deputy leader Tom Watson has suggested the UK could stay under EU rule “permanently” if Jeremy Corbyn gets into Number 10.

The party’s ever-changing Brexit policy has seen its Number 2 admit Britain could maintain single market and customs union membership forever.

This would also mean keeping free movement and not taking back control of our borders, continued payments into the Brussels budget and accepting European Court judgements.

And it is despite both the Prime Minister Theresa May, and his boss Mr Corbyn, saying Britain has to leave it.

But Mr Watson’s comments to the BBC are the latest in a string of Labour figures who have leapt on the shift in position by the shadow Brexit secretary to try and thwart Brexit.

Sir Keir Starmer said at the weekend the UK should transitionally remain in the trade organisations for up to four years after formally leaving the EU in 2019.

Asked if Labour was now the party of soft Brexit, Mr Watson told Newsnight: "Yes, you have seen Keir Starmer's statement, we think that being part of the customs union and the single market is important in those transitional times because that is the way you protect jobs and the economy.

“And it might be a permanent outcome of the negotiations, but we have got to see how those negotiations go."
