Most Tories want to ditch Theresa May as leader claims George Osborne

At a lunch in Parliament the former minister – once favourite to enter Number 10 after David Cameron left the role – said there is a “consensus view” Mrs May cannot continue until the next planned general election in 2022.

He attacked her Government’s record – arguing it was “losing economic credibility” as it is hostile to business, “anti-tech” and pretending it can build the homes the country needs without easing green belt restrictions.

Sticking the knife in over her botched General Election he said she lost her majority because she made a “big mistake” in telling those who don’t like Brexit to “shut up”.

Mr Osborne said he was “hopeful” that “long before we get to the general election” the Government will advocate a “softer” form of Brexit – saying they don’t have the votes for a hard Brexit.
