The SAG Award winner prepared to play Katja Sekerci – a woman whose Kurdish husband and five-year-old son are killed in a neo-Nazis terrorist attack – by attending self-help groups in New York and Germany.
‘Quickly, I realized the best way to research was to listen,’ explained Kruger (born Heidkrüger), whose stepfather passed away during production.
‘I breathed this movie. I breathed the victims’ suffering. I tried to be as truthful as I could.’
