"Other communities have integrated very well, but the audit shows that Pakistani women who don’t speak English or go out to work are living in an entirely different society and are shockingly badly integrated."

Initial findings also confirmed that white pupils from state schools had the lowest university entry rate across the UK in 2016.

The PM said last week that the Government plans to expand mentoring programmes into 20 ‘hotspots’ around the country in a first step to closing the gaps.

She said: “In doing this work, we are holding a mirror up to our society.

“My most fundamental political belief is that how far you go in life should be based on your talent and how hard you work – and nothing else."
