Alamy The Scottish Government have opened up a public consultation on changing sex law

The review into Scotland’s Gender Recognition Act 2004 has called for evidence about allowing "children who have sufficient legal capacity, but who may not have reached puberty, to apply" to legally change their sex.

It is look at whether "someone aged 12 or more is presumed to be old and mature enough to have such understanding."

SNP ministers want to set up “self-declaration system” gender and scrap the law that says a medical diagnosis is required to change from male to female or vice versa.

They believe the age should be dropped to 16, but are currently surveying public opinion on taking it all the way down to 12.
