The US rate for gun deaths has increased for the second straight year, following 15 years of relative stability, according to the CDC.

In 2016, more than 38,000 people were killed by guns in 2016, according to this most recent data.

In recent years, suicide has accounted for about two thirds of gun deaths in the US, but estimates from the FBI suggest that homicides are on the rise as overall suicide rates fall.

The rate of gun deaths was stable in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the last quarter of 2016, but with one of the deadliest mass shootings in US history taking place last month, those number stand to rise.
