PA Theresa May has refused to back Sir Michael Fallon by name after his knee-touching confession
It was sparked by the so-called “dirty dossier”, which listed a litany of lurid claims about MPs as well as consensual sexual relationships, and is threatening to bring down the Prime Minister.
After one of her senior colleagues was outed her official spokesman would only say she "has confidence in her Government and her ministers".
Repeatedly pressed to comment on Mr Fallon, the official told reporters at a briefing: "The Defence Secretary has said that he apologised for an incident that took place some time ago. I don't believe there is a complaint that has been made against him – that's all I have to say on that matter."
But the spokesman did say that there was no Cabinet Office investigation into the father-of-two, as Ms Hartley-Brewer said she did not feel like she was a victim, and therefore there was no complainant.
