PA:Press Association Universities Minister Jo Johnson says struggling students should tighten their belts

In a panel discussion with MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis he said it was up to students to work out how to keep their living costs down and manage their Government loans.

He said they could work, save or "borrow from their parents if they wish".

He added: "Students have many different choices about the kind of lifestyle they want at university.

"Some students want to live very modestly and have a frugal existence, focusing on their studies. Other students may want a different lifestyle.” But Mr Lewis blasted him for not providing loans that students could live on as he forced the minister to admit loans should be renamed as a graduate contribution like other countries.
