There’s nothing like a boat to expose the true hierarchy within a family. And there’s nothing like a river with 16 locks to be opened, negotiated with care and then closed, to start an argument.

A week spent on the River Lot in France was my idea, so I didn’t let my smile slip when we picked up our boat in Douelle, a day-long drive from the Eurotunnel exit at Calais, and realised that our floating home was more of a margarine tub than a slimline gin palace.

We had booked late so were lucky to get a boat at all. And there are not that many vessels for hire travelling from Douelle down to Saint-Cirq Lapopie and back. Consequently, boating on the Lot is more peaceful, especially in August, than on the busier Loire or the Dordogne.
