Wolfenstein Hitler can be seen without his moustache in the image on the left, which is taken from the German version of the game

But in German trailers, the gaming firm Bethesda has chosen to remove the Nazi leader's trademark facial hair in a bid to skirt anti-Nazi laws in the country.

In Germany since 1945 the Swastika and all other Nazi symbols have been banned and the game has taken serious steps to avoid falling foul of the law.

Hitler isn't even acknowledged and other characters refer to him as "my Chancellor", or "mein Kanzler", a direct translation of "my healer".

Swastikas are replaced by a new, made-up three-pronged symbol.
